The Anthill Mob: John

Every month we sit down with one of the team here at Anthill HQ, to let you get to know about them, and us, that little bit better.

Today it’s the turn of our Software Developer, John Gill!

Q. What is your role?

My role at Anthill is that of a Software Developer meaning I help to build and maintain the Anthill platform with exciting new technologies and approaches.

I also like to think my role is to take on new ideas and to use them in the code I produce, making sure the code is solid and I’m constantly learning.

This is certainly the case here!

Q. What was your first job?

Well, if you count being a paper boy for the local newsagent when I was a young lad it’d be that.

The afternoon shift not the morning one, missed out on an extra £1 a week doing that one!

I would like to say that, but a more fitting answer would be a General Assistant (read – shelf stacker) at Tesco when I was at university.

Q. What is your proudest moment at Anthill?

Working on a new client’s appointment booking application was a big start to my career here.

I’ve learnt more from that project than any others I’ve done to date whilst also having an opportunity to put some of the design patterns I’ve recently learnt into practice.

The other reason is to see something work from the ground and to be actively helping the client improve.

This is a big win for myself, as seeing someone use what you’ve built is a massive bonus to me.

Q. What are your goals for the year ahead?

To take on more coding approaches and further expand my knowledge base, which should help my growth and hopefully contribute more to the whole team.

I will also be focusing some more time on frontend development.

In my previous role, I worked more on the backend so now it’s time to push on with the frontend side again.

The main aim will be to construct the user interface and connect it to the backend, far better than I’ve done in the past – will be amazing!

To grow with the whole team as well, I do think everyone has their part to play and I learn so much by talking to other colleagues, also to see how they are as well, which is important!

Q. What other organisations do you most admire and why?

I’ve always admired Richard Branson, with what he’s done with his Virgin brand, taking it from a market stall to radio and aviation.

He was also someone that said he has dyslexia and it actually helped rather than hindered him.

I don’t like to use my dyslexia as a negative, but I did find it challenging at a young child and I was worried whether it would hold me back.

So using him as an example I’ve pushed on and I’m enjoying the journey being a Software Developer is taking me on – even the frustrating times!

Q. What are you adding to the Anthill playlist?

I’m a fan of dance music, mainly trance or house as I like to show some moves on the dance floor.

I can’t dance but hey it’s all fun at the end of the day!

So my music might have to be added onto the Friday playlist…
